A major characteristic that divides various types of materials is their dimensionality. It is well know that the properties of materials are size-dependent. Nanomaterials are intermediate in size between isolated atoms and molecules and bulk materials. At this scale the properties of matter, such as energy, change.

Among all the functional materials to be synthesized on the nanoscale, metal oxides are particularly attractive candidates due to theirs variety of structures and properties that cover almost all aspects of materials science and solid state physics.

The synthesis of metal oxides on the nanoscale represents a major challenging research area and in the same times an inspiration for designing new materials. Many different synthesis methods have been carried out in order to obtain nano-size metal oxides nanoparticles with well-defined and uniform crystallite sizes, different crystallite shape and complex assembly properties. Lichid – phase synthesis methods include precipitation/coprecipitation, hydrolytic or non hydrolytic sol-gel processes, hydrothermal or solvothermal methods. These methods present several advantages compared with physical or electrochemical methods: relatively simple experimental set-up, relatively low temperature, low cost and generally environment friendly.

The synthesis of metal oxides nanoparticles with control over size, shape and size distribution via lichid-phase methods represents an important milestone for C4S chemistry group.
